Groomed eyebrows gently frame your face
- groom them with this wax

A great addition to your makeup is also a brow wax. Eyebrow wax can not only be used to fix the shape of your eyebrows, but thanks to the pigments it can be used to fill in missing spots and highlight and contour the overall look of your brows, it is not a wax for waxing. We have prepared two types for you - a light and a dark shade. However, if you have specific requirements for your shade, there's nothing stopping you from mixing it exactly to your liking!

Eyebrow wax - raw materials

As the name suggests, the base of the eyebrow wax will be wax. We have chosen white beeswax because of its good availability and combinability with other raw materials. The product is then supplemented with pigments and oil so that the resulting wax has a pleasant consistency and sufficient coverage.

Eyebrow wax - procedure

1. Disinfect all tools, containers and packaging, for example with ethanol.
2. Weigh the raw materials of phase A into a heat-resistant container. Cover with foil and place on a water bath and heat.
3. In the meantime, weigh the raw materials of phase B into another container. Add Phase B to the melted Phase A while still in the water bath and stir thoroughly.
4. Stir the eyebrow wax on the water bath for a few minutes until all the pigments are thoroughly combined and the lumps disappear. It is advisable to use a silicone spatula (e.g. confectioner's spatula). If you no longer see any residue of white unmixed titanium dioxide or other pigments when you pass it over the bottom of the container, the product is sufficiently mixed.
5. Pour the still-hot brow wax into the prepared cups and leave to set, ideally overnight, to achieve the final consistency. The product is then ready to use.

Eyebrow wax - tips and tricks

Here are some tips and tricks to make eyebrow wax easier to make or to solve problems when making it.

Since eyebrow wax does not contain any water-based ingredients, there is no need to create an emulsion and production is all the easier. On the other hand, the key step in production is to thoroughly mix the pigments in the melted oil phase.

If the pigments are not thoroughly mixed, lumps of pigment may sink to the bottom of the container and smudges of darker or lighter patches of unmixed pigments may form on the skin when applied. This can be prevented by thoroughly mixing the mixture with, for example, a silicone spatula. For smaller batches, you can also use small silicone spatulas for face masks.

An option to improve the bonding of pigments and oils is to mix the pigments (all of phase B) thoroughly in a blender or small mixing bowl before adding them to phase A. This is especially handy if you are making larger batches. On the other hand, if you only produce small quantities, you may lose quite a lot of the powdered raw material due to the use of a mortar or blender, which will be more difficult to get out of the blender in particular.

When applying eyebrow wax, it is advisable to use a stiffer bevelled brush, but you can reach for any applicator that suits you. Oil-based makeup removers (makeup oil or balm) are good for makeup removal.

If you want to mix your own shade, start with small additions of individual pigments (yellow, black or brown titanium dioxide). Write down the amounts so you can recreate the shade later.

The resulting eyebrow wax does not contain water, so there is no need to use a preservative. However, if the oils and waxes in the product oxidize significantly (the product becomes smelly, the consistency changes to sticky, or the color changes), do not use the product further and make a new one. It is ideal to make small batches so that you always have fresh product on hand.

Eyebrow wax - ingredients and their importance

Below we will introduce you to the different raw materials for the production of eyebrow wax. You will learn more about their possible confusions and their importance for the recipe, so that you can prepare a tailor-made product.

MCT Caprylis - neutral oil

MCT Caprylis Neutral Oil was chosen to soften the resulting brow wax and make application easy. The advantage of this oil lies in its high stability and so it is very little prone to oxidation. Thanks to this, products containing it will stay fresh longer even without the use of an antioxidant. In addition, MCT Caprylis is odourless and colourless and so will not affect the final appearance of the product. Its alternatives are other oils that are minimally coloured like fractionated coconut oil. However, you can reach for any liquid vegetable oil.

Beeswax white

Beeswax has been chosen to add hardness and the right consistency to the final product. White beeswax is refined and stripped of colour and scent, so it is suitable for pigmented products as it will not affect their colour. However, you can replace it with a natural, unrefined version of beeswax.

For vegan cosmetics, almond wax is suitable. Overall, you can also substitute beeswax with other waxes for cosmetics, but be aware of a slight change in the stiffness and consistency of the final product. Waxes vary in hardness and melting point.

By reducing the proportion of wax in the recipe, you can create a brow wax that is softer and easier to apply. Conversely, if you find that your brow wax melts too much and doesn't adhere well to the skin, increase the wax content of the recipe at the expense of the oil.

Rice starch modified

Rice starch is a raw material specially formulated for use in cosmetics, which has two roles in this recipe . It is a matte white powder, which has the task of creating a uniform color base for the addition of colored oxides and achieving the coloration of the resulting brow wax. Its second role is to improve the durability of the makeup (improving the adhesion of the product on the skin) and to slightly thicken the consistency of the mixture. We recommend not to skip this ingredient as it will change both the consistency and the colour of the final product on the skin.

Titanium dioxide, oil

Titanium dioxide is a distinctive white pigment. Due to its presence, it is sufficient to use much smaller amounts of colour pigments to achieve the intense colour of the eyebrow wax. Without titanium dioxide, the eyebrow wax would contour poorly and fill in the missing parts of the eyebrows. This is also why it is a good idea to add this substance to the product.

Always reach for oil-soluble titanium dioxide, otherwise it will take too long to fully combine with the other ingredients. Also, when mixing the final product, make sure you don't see any white spots of unmixed titanium dioxide in the product before pouring it into the packaging.

Iron oxides

The main colour pigments in brow wax are different coloured versions of iron oxide. Specifically, its yellow, brown and black versions. It is by combining these pigments that you can also mix and match the shade exactly to your liking.

Don't confuse the oxides with mica powder - mica powders have glare in them, and so such eyebrow wax may not give the most natural look on the skin. However, if you want a slightly glossy and shimmery brow wax, feel free to add mica powders.

Caution

As mentioned, you can experiment with homemade recipes to achieve the desired properties. However, many factors such as humidity, temperature, quality of ingredients or storage can affect the final result.

Before using any raw material to make a cosmetic product, familiarize yourself with its properties, recommended dosage, storage conditions or safe handling. Any raw material may have the potential to cause an allergic reaction in sensitive individuals, so before using a product, we recommend that you find out if you suffer from an allergy to any of the raw materials or the overall product, e.g. by a skin test.

If you have very sensitive or very acne-prone skin, or other skin and health problems, we recommend that you consult a medical professional before applying a new product to your skin, whether it is a homemade cosmetic product, a pure raw material or a commercially available product.
