For an enhanced tan effect or for a party, glitter body oil is the perfect choice. This is a regular oil to which selected pigments or cosmetic glitters have been added to turn an ordinary oil into a shimmering product. In addition, we have added an emulsifier to our glitter oils to ensure that the glitter sits on the bottom more slowly and also that it rubs off less from the skin onto clothing and the like. Read on for our comparison of the three most commonly used emulsifiers for making glitter body oil.
As mentioned, we have prepared a comparison of three different emulsifiers, in our case Olivem 1000, Beautyderm K10 and Polyaquol-2W. These emulsifiers are commonly used for the production of creams, but can also be used in pure oil products. Therefore, below you will find three recipes, as Olivem 1000 and Polyaquol-2W require a lower dosage than Beautyderm K10. The preparation procedure was the same for all products.

1. disinfect all utensils, containers and packaging that come into contact with the product or raw materials, for example with ethanol. Make sure all utensils are dry and there is no residual water on them.2.weigh the oil and emulsifier into a heat-resistant container, place on a water bath until the emulsifier has melted.3. remove the mixture from the bath and wait for the temperature to drop below 40°C, then add tocopheryl acetateand the appropriate pigment (mica powder/glitter, etc.).4. mix well and pour into the selected container.
Below you will find our observations when comparing the different emulsifiers that have been used to make glitter body oil. Of course, it is also possible to omit the emulsifier altogether, but in this case, the mica powder or glitters will sit right at the bottom and the product must always be shaken before use. If this doesn't bother you, feel free to combine just your favourite oil and the pigment of your choice to create a quickand easy glitter body oil.
Beautyderm K10 is considered to be a replacement for Olivem 1000 and although it shows similar properties in creams, this was not the case when making a shimmering body oil. In the preparation of the 6% emulsifier blend in the oil,the mixture with Beautyderm K10 remained fluid even after cooling, but the mixture with Olive 1000 solidified. It was therefore necessary to reduce the amount of emulsifier to 3% with Olive 1000.At the same time Beautyderm K10 gave a slightly milky cloudy oil, similar to the other emulsifiers, however Beautyderm melted well and easily in the oil and the mixture was homogeneous. Turbidity does not matter when using pigments as the dyes cover it. However, where Beautyderm K10's biggest disadvantage lay was that this emulsifier was the weakest in holding the pigment used in the float. After 24 hours, the pigment had dropped to about halfway down the container and also stayed there after a few days. Therefore, the use of Beautyderm K10 proved to be rather unnecessary with respect to keeping as much pigment as possible in the float. On the other hand, it didquite well in helping to keep the pigment on the skinand lessening its rubbing off on clothing.
As mentioned with Beautyderm K10, at a concentration of 6%, Olivem 1000 produces a solid mixture unusable for application, so its content was reduced to 3%. With Olivem 1000, however, this emulsifier took a very long time to melt and even then a completely homogeneous mixture of emulsifier and oil was not achieved, so if you don't want to wait a long time in a water bath for it to dissolve, try one of the other emulsifiers. On the other hand, the Olivem 1000 held the glitter fairly well in the float, the glitter only dropped by about a fifth in 24 hours, which is fairly normal considering the amount of pigment and the concentration of emulsifier. As for abrasion resistance, this was quite low, on the other hand, larger sized glitters were used, which are harder to adhere to the skin than mica powder. The advantage is that the glitters remained in the float even after a few days and did not sink to the bottom.

The last emulsifier tested was Polyaquol-2W. This emulsifier also had to be used at a concentration of 3%, as at 6% it formed a solid mixture with the oils. When 3% was used, a fine milky haze was formed, as with the other emulsifiers, but this did not bother the pigments used. Polyaquol-2W dissolved slightly slower than Beautyderm K10, but still relatively quickly and formed a homogeneous mixture with the oils when dissolved. Polyaquol-2W held the mica powder in the air very well, comparable to Olive 1000. Mica powderalso dropped by only a quarter in 24 hours. At the same time, Polyaquol-2W helped to reduce the abrasion of the mica powder on clothing after application to the skin. On the other hand, after a few days, the mica powder began to settle more significantly about halfway through the container even after repeated stirring.
Below you will find a description of the different ingredients used to make the glitter body oilas well as their properties and any substitutions that can be made.
The basis for the production of glitter body oil is, of course, the oil. MCT caprylis has been used as it is a colourless transparent oil which shows very good stability and resistance to oxidation, and therefore the product will last quite a long time using this oil. If you have your favourite vegetable oil, you can substitute it with MCT caprylis in its entirety. It is a good idea to use oils that are colorless or have minimal color, such as fractionated coconut oil. Do not use oils with too many pigments such as rosehip, raspberry or carrot macerate as they can affect the final colour of the product. You can also use a mixture of your favourite oils. In addition, other oil-based actives can be added to this product, for example coenzyme Q10 is common, prefer the liquid form of coenzyme Q10 to avoid discolouration of the product. Or you can spice up your product with your favourite fragrance, adding for example essential or fragrance oils to this oil blend after it has cooled .Another sought-after active ingredient for oils are CO2 extracts, which are also soluble in oils. Again, for actives, as well as fragrance and essential oils, it is important to add them only after the mixture has cooled down, so that the heat does not destroy them.
A closer comparison of the properties of emulsifiers has been discussed above. Just to summarise, the choice of emulsifier depends on your preferred product properties. The emulsifier can also be omitted altogether, however, in this case you must always shake the product before use to allow the pigments to float.
The most beautiful part of making a shimmer body oil is adding the pigment and gradually transforming an ordinary oil into a shimmering wonder. You can reach for one type of pigment, as in our case, or combine several types of pigments. You can also increase or decrease the dose of pigments according to your preference. In our tests, we used three basic types, namely mica powder, two-tone pigment (gives the highlights of two colors) and cosmetic glitters.Mica powder Nearly nude looks quite dark at first glance, but fits after thorough blendingon lighter skin. Primarily, however, this blend is intended for darker or tanned skin. It gives a subtle bronze glow that stands out on the face, for example. The two-tone gold pigment does not provide an intense golden colour at first glance, but once applied to the skin, the golden highlights are visible. The resulting shimmering body oil is subtly pigmented and so is also suitable for everyday wear. The cosmetic glitters represent the largest particles ofthe pigments used and so are most visible on the skin. They are especially appreciated by children, they are suitable for parties or special events, they are quite visible for everyday wear. They are also larger sized pigments and so are harder to keep on the skin for long periods of time - they can rub off.
Tocopheryl acetate, or otherwise known as vitamin E, is not only a vitamin that plays a role in skin nutrition, but it is also an antioxidant and so fights free radicals. The antioxidant properties of this oil-soluble vitamin are especially appreciated because it slows down the oxidation of oils. If you choose to use mainly virgin, cold-pressed oils, it is a good idea to add tocopheryl acetate or another form of vitamin E to prolong the freshness of the oils.So tocopheryl acetate is not a necessary part of the product, but if you want to enjoy a shimmering body oil for longer, think about adding it to the mix. It is always a good idea to add any form of vitamin E after it has cooled, as it is a heat-sensitive substance.
As mentioned, you can experiment with homemade recipes to achieve the desired properties. However, many factors such as humidity, temperature, quality of ingredients and storage can affect the final result. Before using any raw material to make a cosmetic product, familiarize yourself with its properties, recommended dosage, storage conditions or safe handling. Any raw material may have the potential to cause an allergic reaction in sensitive individuals, so before using a product, we recommend that you find out if you suffer from an allergy to any of the raw materials or the overall product, e.g. by a skin test. If you have very sensitive or very acne-prone skin, or other skin and health problems, we recommend that you consult a medical professionalbefore applying a new product to your skin, whether it is a homemade cosmetic product, a pure raw material or a commercially available product.
The shimmering body oil will enhance and prolong your summer tan even during Indian summer. It will give your skin a glow and nourish it at the same time. Have you already created one?
