Today we'll show you how to make a soap with a swirl effect. The swirl effect is an interesting colour effect that can be applied to any soap making process, so don't be afraid to experiment with it and incorporate it into your designs. A similar effect can also be achieved in cold process soaps made from oils and hydroxide, but the process is slightly different as you are not working directly with the colours, but need to colour some of the soap beforehand.
The swirl effect can be achieved by using liquid dyes and, of course, soap mass. Choose the soap mass that suits you best. However, we recommend to go for a translucent soap mass, as the colour effect will be more pronounced.
To make the swirl technique as easy and effective as possible to apply, here are some hints and tips on how to do it.
The important thing is to work with a thin layer of soap. As liquid dye sinks to the bottom easily, if you apply it in a thicker layer, the swirl effect may not be as pronounced as all the dye will settle to the bottom.
If you are working on a more complex and larger soap, create a thin layer with a swirl effect first and then add the rest of the soap mass after it has set. This will ensure that the soap will have a swirl effect, but all the colour will not sink to the bottom.
Choose liquid dyes for colouring the soap otherwise it will be impossible or very difficult to achieve a swirl effect. If you want to use mica powders, it is possible to mix them with IPA first and apply them to the soap, but the colour effect will be different as the viscosity of such a mixture is different and the IPA present will cause a different pigment dispersion.
If possible, choose a translucent soap mass. In a white or other opaque mass, the swirl effect will disappear completely as soon as the dye drops deeper inside the soap.
It is a good idea to let the temperature of the soap drop slightly before adding color. This will make the soap less runny and the dye will sink more slowly, creating a nicer pattern.
Before any use of raw materials for the manufacture of cosmetic products, it is essential to become thoroughly familiar with their properties, recommended dosage, storage conditions and safe handling. It is important to note that any raw material may cause an allergic reaction in sensitive individuals. Therefore, we recommend that a skin test be performed before applying any new product to the skin.
If you have very sensitive or acne-prone skin, or suffer from other skin and health problems, it is advisable to consult a medical professional before applying new products. This applies not only to homemade cosmetic products, but also to pure raw materials or commercially available products.
When experimenting with homemade recipes, there are many factors to consider, such as humidity, temperature, the quality of the ingredients and their storage. These factors can affect the end result and the efficacy of the product. So be careful and experiment with common sense!
