A great addition to your beauty products and a raw material that you will also appreciate when making soap is sunflower oil, rich in oleic acid. However, this is not the classic sunflower oil as you know it from the kitchen.
High oleic sunflower oil is at least 80% oleic acid. Traditional sunflower oil, however, is around 20 % oleic acid and has a higher content of linolenic fatty acid, which is present in the lipids.
High oleic sunflower oil is produced by pressing the seeds of sunflowers that have been specially bred for their high oleic acid content. Since this fatty acid contains fewer double bonds than linolenic acid, it is less susceptible to oxidation than traditional sunflower oil. Therefore, sunflower oil rich in oleic acid will give you products that have longer stability and durability. Also because of this, this oil can be represented in higher quantities in soap making.
Its dosage in soap making depends on the composition of the other oils in the recipe as well as on the desired properties of the soap (hardness, foaminess, etc.). You can check the total proportion of reactive fatty acids and the expected properties of the soap, for example, by using various soap calculators.
When making soap, you will appreciate the increased content of oleic acid, as it is this fatty acid that contributes to the soap's nourishing and moisturising properties. At the same time, it adds hardness to the soap, but be aware that soaps with a higher content of sunflower oil rich in oleic acid will lather less.
