Product description

Pentylene glycol (Pentane-1,2-diol or also Pentiol) is classified as an organic substance - alcohol, due to the presence of two hydroxyl groups. It is thanks to them that pentylene glycol is unrestrictedly and easily miscible with water. It is obtained from natural sources, by processing corn and sugar cane, and is Ecocert Cosmos and NATRUE certified. The sources for its production are not derived from GMO raw materials.

It is a transparent, viscous, odourless liquid, similar to glycerin. However, pentylene glycol is close to glycerin not only in appearance, but also in its moisturizing and hydrating properties. In cosmetics, it helps to stabilise emulsions, as it reduces the particle size of emulsions (water and oil droplets) by more than half at a dose of 5%. It is also used as a conditioner in hair care.

Pentylene glycol also makes it possible to incorporate essential or fragrance oils, esters or other small quantities of oils or non-polar substances into water (the substances must first be mixed with pentylene glycol and then this mixture added to the final product). Pentylene glycol thus also serves as an effective solvent, a solubilizer of organic substances.

Another important property of pentylene glycol is its antimicrobial nature. Pentylene glycol exhibits a synergistic (mutually reinforcing) effect with many other antimicrobial agents, such as preservatives. As a result, the addition of pentylene glycol allows a reduction in the amount of residual preservatives used.

Pentylene glycol is an excellent aid in the maceration of herbs. It does not dry out like conventional alcohol and, thanks to its properties, it leaches out both water- and fat-soluble substances from the herbs.

Recommended dosage 1-5 %.

5.0% when used as a humectant and preservative
3.0% when used as a humectant and supporting preservative
1.0% when used as a humectant or to aid penetration of active ingredients

pH: no limit

Pentylene glycol is independent of the pH of the product (tolerates acidic to alkaline pH). It is soluble in both water and oil.

EWG safety rating: 1
