Do you want to treat yourself to skin care that combines the moisturising effects of a serum with the nourishing properties of a cream? You've come to the right place, a facial yoghurt combines several moisturising ingredients with oils to leave your skin nourished and conditioned. Moisturising facial yoghurt is thus appreciated not only by dry, but also by oily or combination skin, because it does not burden the skin unnecessarily with excess oils.
The production process of moisturizing facial yoghurt is similar to that of a cream, but for increased hydration, some active ingredients such as Vegeluron have been added to care for the skin and bring back lost water. Try the non-stressing formula of moisturizing facial yogurt for yourself!
When making moisturizing facial yoghurt, take inspiration from our tips and tricks that will make it easier to make and help you solve some of the problems in preparing this product. To activate the preservative Spectrastat G2, it needs to be heated to 45°C, so it is advisable to mix it with a little water beforehand to make it easier to dispense into the prepared emulsion. When heating on the water bath, be sure to cover the containers with foil to prevent water from the water bath from entering and to prevent excessive evaporation. If you want to be very consistent, weigh the water phase before heating and then after heating (put a saucer under the hot container before placing it on the scales - heat damages the scales) and make up for any missing water that has evaporated. Make sure both phases are at the same temperature before adding the water phase to the oil phase. When mixing with a stick blender, the mixture will only start to thicken as it cools, at the same time remember to stir the mixture periodically with the blender even while cooling, this will reduce the risk of the phases separating. Always check the pH of the product before finishing and adjust the pH to 4,5-5,5 by adding lactic acid. The percentage of lactic acid given is only a guide, as the actual amount depends on the quality of the ingredients, the accuracy of batching and weighing, or other factors, so add the acid drop by drop and stir it thoroughly into the mix and check the pH after each addition.
Want to know more about the meaning of the different ingredients or their substitutions in the instructions for the moisturizing facial gel? You have come to the right place!
To prepare an emulsion, we need a water base, and this is where demineralised water comes in handy. Don't substitute tap water or boiled water - such water contains minerals that can undermine the stability of the emulsion. You can replace demineralised water with distilled water or hydrolates, which will also give the product a subtle floral scent.
Vegeluron gel performs three roles in a facial yoghurt. First of all, it gives a gel-like, yoghurt-like consistency to the final product. Next, it helps to thicken it, and last but not least, it acts as an active ingredient - it actively moisturises the skin and is also considered a plant-based substitute for hyaluronic acid.If you omit Vegeluron gel from the recipe or change the amount you will get a product with a different texture and viscosity. It can be replaced with hyaluronic acid, but you'll have to fiddle with the dosage until you reach the desired consistency.
Mica powder was chosen to colour the product. Mica powders have the advantage of combining well with a wide range of products, and are also available in a wide range of colours. Mica powder can also be omitted from the moisturizing lotion, the product will then be white. If you want to play around with the intensity of the resulting colour, change the mica powder content at the expense of water. Be sure to mix it in glycerine first - this will avoid lumps forming and the powder will disperse more evenly in the product more quickly.
A popular moisturizing and hydrating ingredient for skin is glycerin. This alcohol dissolves well in water and can handle higher temperatures, so it can be added straight to the aqueous phase, which will then be heated. In addition, it helps to better incorporate powdered ingredients such as hyaluronic acid, vegetable gums or mica powders, so don't omit glycerin from your moisturizing lotion if possible.
The essential oil of phase C is jojoba oil. This luxurious oil is great for skin care and is neutral in scent and color, so it won't interfere with the resulting fragrance and color of the facial yogurt. However, if you have another favorite liquid vegetable oil, feel free to substitute it for jojoba oil. You can also increase the jojoba oil content if you find the product insufficiently over-oily for your skin.
An alternative to silicones in skin creams is LexFeel Natural. This raw material has both appearance and properties similar to oils, which is also why it is added to the oil phase of the product. However, unlike oils, it is minimally greasy and weighs down the skin, so don't leave it out if you want a lightweight product that won't leave a greasy feeling on your skin. You can replace LexFeel Natural with liquid vegetable oils.
Beautyderm K10 is also anemulsifier, or a substance that ensures the water and oil phases are connected. The use of an emulsifier is necessary in the product, otherwise the aqueous and oil components will not be interconnected. By increasing the amount of emulsifier in the moisturizing lotion , you will achieve a thicker product with a higher viscosity and vice versa. You can replace it with other emulsifiers, such as Olivem 1000, but be aware of the change in viscosity.
To add a subtle floral scent to the moisturizing facial yogurt, we chose lavender essential oil. It's up to you which essential oil you choose, but be sure to check the dosage (e.g. IFRA standards) before using it in your facial products. Avoid citrus essential oils, which could increase the risk of an allergic reaction when exposed to the sun.You can also skip perfuming or reach for fragrance oils, which offer an even wider range of options than essential oils.
Spectrastat G2 is a natural preservative that tolerates a wider pH range and so is great for a wide range of products. However, it must be warmed up before use or it will not be active. In this case, we thus exceptionally add the preservative before cooling the product and adjusting the pH. However, if you are going to substitute Spectrastat G2 for another preservative (reach for the broad spectrum ones), make sure to check that it is dosed up to the cooling phase and what pH it requires for its effectiveness. This is because most preservatives are added below 35°C and sometimes it is necessary to acidify the product for the preservative to be active. However, don't skip theaddition of a preservative because moisturizing lotion contains water, and without a preservative, it will spoil quickly (on the scale of days) and will be unusable.
Tocopheryl acetate or vitamin E is a great antioxidant for the skin. However, it also has another role - its antioxidant properties also protect the oils in the product, delaying their oxidation.Vitamin E is classed as an active ingredient, so add it only at the cooling stage. Substitute tocopheryl acetate with tocopherol or omit vitamin E altogether.
Lactic acid was chosen to adjust the pH. An alternative to lactic acid is citric acid, but this is sold in powder form, so it is necessary to first prepare a 50 % aqueous solution of this acid (demineralised water and acid 1:1) and then use this to adjust the pH.Do not skip the pH adjustment, otherwise the product will not reach the physiological pH of the skin (4,5-5,5).
As mentioned, you can experiment with homemade recipes to achieve the desired properties. However, many factors such as humidity, temperature, quality of ingredients and storage can affect the final result. Before using any raw material to make a cosmetic product, familiarize yourself with its properties, recommended dosage, storage conditions or safe handling. Any raw material may have the potential to cause an allergic reaction in sensitive individuals, so before using a product, we recommend that you find out if you suffer from an allergy to any of the raw materials or the overall product, e.g. by a skin test. If you have very sensitive or very acne-prone skin, or other skin and health problems, we recommend that you consult a medical professional before applying a new product to your skin, whether it is a homemade cosmetic product, a pure raw material or a commercially available product.
