Sodium hydroxide NaOH (also known as caustic soda, caustic soda or in the food industry as E524) is one of the strongest bases.
It is a white solid used in cosmetics to make soaps or solid soap shampoos. The hydroxide in our range is in the form of microspheres or flakes that dissolve quickly in water.
The use of potassium hydroxide in the manufacture of soaps, like sodium hydroxide, has the effect of saponifying fats and oils. As it is a strong chemical, certain precautions must be observed in handling it and the correct amount should be selected in the recipe. For this purpose, we always recommend using a soap calculator (an app that you can easily find here www.soapcalc.net, for example). It is strongly hygroscopic, which means that it attracts moisture easily, so always keep it in a closed container in a dry place. For working with hydroxide, set aside a suitable work area, free from children, animals, food. You should work with hydroxide in a well-ventilated room and use protective equipment - gloves and goggles (ALWAYS!), suitable clothing that covers the whole body.Choose a suitable container (ideally stainless steel) to prepare the solution and stir the solution in the sink. The solution can reach temperatures of up to 90°C, so the container must be durable. Pour cold or lukewarm water over the hydroxide, do not use warm or hot water, it could cause a small explosion :).When making the solution, we recommend holding your breath for a moment or turning your head away (you can also use a mask) to minimize the risk of inhaling the fumes.ALWAYS POUR THE HYDROXIDE INTO THE WATER, NEVER THE OTHER WAY AROUND!
POUR THE FINISHED SOLUTION INTO THE OILS, NEVER THE OTHER WAY AROUND!
* In case of spillage of the solution, contamination of the work area or spillage of hydroxide beads, neutralise them with a cloth soaked in a vinegar or citric acid solution.* In case of skin contact, place the affected area under a stream of running water, rinse properly and then rub or spray with an acidic solution (citric acid or vinegar solution). * If the eyes are affected, flush them thoroughly for at least 30 minutes with a stream of cold water and contact a doctor immediately. Do not apply acid solution to the eyes.If you follow all safety precautions, there is no danger when working with hydroxide and we believe that soap making will enchant you :).For more information about the quality of the product, please refer to the attestation, which we update every time with a new batch. All raw materials supplied are of cosmetic quality, not suitable for internal use. Please use appropriate protective equipment when handling.
