Today, one of our customers inspired us, and we decided to share a recipe for hyaluronic serum. Her specific question was: what preservative should she use in her formula? We are delighted to see increasing discussions about natural preservatives in the world of natural cosmetics. There are many misconceptions in this area, but there is really nothing to fear—quite the opposite. What you should be concerned about is your skin if you make a product at home using only natural ingredients. Over time, exposure to heat and oxygen can cause the ingredients to degrade, leading to the natural growth of bacteria and mold. A preservative does not necessarily mean something artificial or synthetic. There are natural extracts that slow down the "aging" process of products, helping to maintain the original properties of your natural cosmetics.
Recently, we wrote that the most effective option is a combination of low-molecular-weight (LMW) and high-molecular-weight (HMW) hyaluronic acid, as each works on a different layer of the skin. Therefore, this recipe includes both in equal proportions to maximize their benefits. Another advantage of using both is that HMW hyaluronic acid creates a thicker gel in a water-based formula, eliminating the need for additional thickeners.
Ideally, apply it twice daily—morning and evening—after thoroughly cleansing your face.
Yes! Because this is a water-based product, it is crucial to protect it from microbial growth, which is often invisible to the naked eye. Using contaminated products can have serious consequences for your skin.
There are many effective natural preservatives available today at affordable prices. Without a preservative, your serum will last only about a week in the refrigerator. Considering the cost of hyaluronic acid and the time spent making the serum (which requires continuous application over months for visible results), is it really economical and efficient to discard leftovers weekly and keep making fresh batches? Moreover, by the end of the week, you may already be risking microbial contamination.
The shelf life depends on the type and amount of preservative used, as well as the cleanliness of other ingredients. There are also testing kits available to measure these factors. Generally, this serum should last up to 3 months with proper preservation.
For completely natural products, it is best to make smaller amounts more frequently to ensure freshness and safety.
