Here's how to make a simple gel body scrub that you can customise with mica powders and fragrance or essential oils. Its production is not complicated, so it is a suitable product even for beginners!
The gel body scrub is a water-based product, but it contains a thickening agent - guar gum, which also helps to disperse the small amount of fragrance oil in the product. Jojoba beads were chosen as the exfoliating particles as they do not dissolve in water, so sugar or salt are not suitable as exfoliating material in this recipe.

1. Disinfect all utensils, containers or packaging, e.g. with ethanol.2. Weigh the raw materials of phase A, mix well.3. In a second container , mix the ingredients of phase B, stirring until a thick, lump-free slurry is formed.4. Add the aqueous raw materials (phase A) to the mixture of pigments and guar gum (phase B), stir well, the mixture will slowly begin to thicken.5. Then check the pH of the mixture, e.g. with indicator papers, and adjust with lactic acid to between 4,5 and 5,5. Add the acid drop by drop and always check the pH after each addition. The amount of lactic acid given is only a guide, see Tips and Tricks. 6. After adjusting the pH , stir the remaining ingredients of phase C into the mixture. Ideally, the product should be left to stand overnight in a covered container to obtain the resulting viscosity and then filled into the containers. The peeling is then ready for use.
When making a gel body scrub, you may encounter problems in adjusting the pH, for example. We therefore give you a few tips on how to make this part of the body scrub preparation as easy as possible.the pH of the product needs to be adjusted not only for the correct effectiveness of the preservative, but the resulting scrub will be better tolerated by the skin, as a pH between 4.5 and 5.5 is the physiological pH of the skin. When adjusting the pH, proceed slowly and add the lactic acid drop by drop. Always mix the mixture thoroughly and check the pH before further addition. This is because the amount of lactic acid given is only a guide and your actual consumption will depend on many factors such as the quality of the ingredients, accuracy of weighing, recipe confusion and others.Do not use sugar and salt as exfoliating particles, as these substances will dissolve in the water present in the product. At the same time, the scrub is a rinse-off product, so after massaging it into the skin, rinse the residue from the skin with clean water.
On the following lines we bring you the meaning of the individual ingredients in the recipe. At the same time, you will also learn more about their possible confusions and how to tailor the product to your exact requirements.
The basis of most cosmetics is demineralised water. Do not use tap or filtered water; it will still contain minerals that can interfere with the stability of the product. Alternatively, distilled water or floral hydrolates can be used to replace the entire water portion of a recipe.
Aloe vera juice is a great ingredient for taking care of irritated skin. It is already diluted and preserved aloe vera juice, similar in its properties to hydrolats. This raw material can therefore also be replaced by hydrolates or demineralised water, but any such substitution will result in a change in the amount of lactic acid needed to adjust the pH.
A mixture of pigments ranging from mica powders to two-colour pigments was used to colour the final product. The choice of pigment is really up to you, feel free to reach for cosmetic glitters as well. However, jojoba beads are brown and so will be more visible when using lighter pigments.
A water-soluble alcohol to moisturize the skin is just glycerin. Glycerin also helps to speed up the hydration of the guar gum, and so smaller lumps of this gum will form and you will get a lump-free, uniform gel more quickly. Glycerin can also be omitted from the product, but then it will take longer for the guar gum to fully hydrate.
The use of a thickening agent, in this case guar gum, is necessary to create a gel-like consistency in the product. It is by varying the guar gum content that you can create thicker or thinner gels. An alternative to this gum is xanthan gum, but it thickens slightly more, so it is usually sufficient to add only 1%.
The exfoliating ingredient of the product is the exfoliating beads. These are biodegradable exfoliating particles derived from jojoba oil. Any other water insoluble exfoliating particles such as strawberry seeds or finely ground pumice powder are an alternative. You can also play around with the content of exfoliating particles in the gel scrub and tailor it to your needs.
For all you lovers of fragrant cosmetics, we have added a wonderfully woody smelling Moroccan Amber fragrance oil to the product. However, you choose your fragrance oil that suits you best. Essential oils are an alternative to fragrance oils, always follow the dosage, e.g. according to IFRA standards, to avoid an allergic reaction. Or prepare an unscented product by omitting the fragrance oil and supplementing with water.
Lactic acid has been chosento adjust the pH and is already sold as an aqueous solution, so you can add it directly to the product. An alternative is citric acid, but this must first be dissolved 1:1 in demineralised water and the resulting solution used to adjust the pH. The pH adjustment must always be carried out for the functionality of the preservative and the good tolerance of the product by the skin. For information on how to do this, please refer to the Tips and Tricks section.
The preservative in the gel body scrub is Euxyl K903. This preservative is active in acidic pH, so it must be modified, for example with lactic acid. Do not leave the preservative out of the product, as the scrub would spoil very quickly due to the water content. Euxyl K903 can also be replaced by another broad spectrum preservative. However, always check in which pH range the preservative is active and adjust the pH of the product accordingly.
As mentioned, you can experiment with homemade recipes to achieve the desired properties. However, many factors such as humidity, temperature, quality of ingredients and storage can affect the final result. Before using any raw material to make a cosmetic product, familiarize yourself with its properties, recommended dosage, storage conditions or safe handling. Any raw material may have the potential to cause an allergic reaction in sensitive individuals, so before using a product, we recommend that you find out if you suffer from an allergy to any of the raw materials or the overall product, e.g. by a skin test. If you have very sensitive or very acne-prone skin, or other skin and health problems, we recommend that you consult a medical professional before applying a new product to your skin, whether it is a homemade cosmetic product, a pure raw material or a commercially available product.
